Photo 13 Apr 767 notes This is Jessica Ahlquist, who got some nasty hate mail recently. The full extent of her crime was petitioning her Rhode Island school to uphold the constitutional separation of church and state by removing a prayer banner on public display.
In the ensuing case joined by the ACLU, Judge Ronald Lagueux (who was appointed by Reagan) ruled in favor of the constitution, called Ahlquist “an articulate and courageous young woman, who took a brave stand, particularly in light of the hostile response she has received from her community”, which is better than what her State Representative Peter Palumbo called her: “an evil little thing”.
Bullying and intimidation are nothing new for Ms. Ahlquist, but at least others are learning about the dark side of the predictable consequences of religious belief.
