Photo 25 Apr 37 notes The separation of church and state (understood by all framers as the intent of the First Amendment) was originally designed to prevent government interference with the various churches of the United States; there’s no point in lying about that.
However, successive administrations soon understood that the benefits also flow in the opposite direction, especially in the Treaty of Tripoli, where it is made clear that religious motives would play no part in US foreign policy, and that this was the unanimous view of the legislative branch. Furthermore, all the evidence suggests that American citizens in general did not object to the freely-available document.
Common sense indicates that if the government can have no part in religious affairs, then logically religious organizations can have no part in government affairs. Common sense also suggests that there is a difference between respecting people’s private religious beliefs and pandering to religious bigotry, prejudice and delusions.
