Photo 21 Jun 79 notes The first written mandate preventing priests for marrying was in 302, reasserted by the Council of Nicea in 325. Celibacy was not actually enforced until the 11th century. Even until 11th century, priests bequeathed to their children, as per tradition. Then the First and Second Councils of the Lateran effectively ordered all such marriages null and void, such that any estate assets should go to the church.
In other words clerical celibacy was literally nothing more than a cynical land grab.
