It’s even more disturbing than that. The reason God asked Adam to name the animals isn’t because God couldn’t think of any names; it’s a symbolic gesture from many early cultures as well as Hebraism, which underlines that Adam, and humans in general, now own animals.

To name something is to declare ownership. This is why parents name their children, and this is why wives take their husband’s name - it’s a transfer of ownership from the father to the new husband. It’s not even symbolic in many modern ceremonies; the father literally “gives the bride away” to the husband.

If you think that’s “charming” or “cute”, then you need to get your head cleaned out.

Religion is infantile in the most sincere sense of the term, in that it exports responsibility (and hence morality) to an external third party to whom you can only relate in a manner you don’t fully understand. In fact, the less you understand it, the more likely you are to trust it.

Yes, this is from some poor deluded fool’s high school project. But there are grown-ups who actually hold this view. I’ve met them. I have spoken to Christians who, while very “tolerant” of my existence, told me to my face that I was an atheist because I secretly wanted to do evil things and get away with them!

I don’t mind people having badly thought-out moral philosophy, or thinly-veiled evil tendencies, but I’d prefer if they didn’t project those things onto me.

I’m an atheist because there isn’t any god. Everything else is negotiable.

This is a bit Orwellian. Not only does religion agree with science, but it always agreed with science.

One of the many, many problems with this chart: What you’ve done there is cherry-pick, with obvious desperation, the parts of the bible you could dig up which might be interpreted as agreeing with reality. You’ve ignored the 95% of the pie chart which represents total divergence. The classic example is when the bible states that pi = 3, which is so stupid I think it should stand on its own.

The fact that Newton had some bizarre beliefs doesn’t invalidate any of the scientific work he did. He spent a lot of time on alchemy, trying to turn lead into gold. He also believed that metal had “some sort of life” because of patterns of crystallisation. He believed that Atlantis was a real place, and wrote about its possible location.

However, I’d be slow to adopt Newton as the poster boy for religious scientists in any case, as he didn’t believe that Jesus was the son of God. Although he believed in “intelligent design” (in the most vague sense), he also believed that this design would need tweaking every now and then. He believed that there was a secret code embedded into the Book of Revelations that would reveal prophecies, and as a result he predicted the world would end before 2060.

Now, if you’re an atheist, it doesn’t matter, because science provides us with the tools to separate out the gibberish from the useful information. But if you’re a Christian, and you’re choosing this rock to perish on, you have a real problem.

Religious people seem to hate atheists not for anything they say or do, but for the fact that they’re atheists. There’s no way to defend against that. “I hate Chinese people because they’re from China and for no other reason.”

Don’t take my word for it. Try asking any of your religious friends exactly why their friends hate atheists. It’s like they’re not entirely sure themselves. The worst of them will deny they hate atheists at all.

1. The phrase “out of context” means nothing unless you’re prepared to explain the context you feel is missing. Otherwise it’s nonsensical. It’s not some magical phrase that eliminates all the contradictions and morally deficient verses in the bible.
